ST. JOHNS TERRACE
WoCo were appointed by local building contractors, Goulden & Sons Ltd, to develop a design for a mixed use project in the centre of Totnes. The project involved the conversion of an existing 1.5 storey derelict garage unit on an extremely constrained site into flexible units that could function beautifully as either dwellings or the client's headquarters. Our proposal for three townhouse units maximised available space by extending vertically inline with the neighbouring building to create 3 storeys, with parking and entry at ground floor, master bedroom at first and open plan living at second. The carefully designed roof form with projecting gables to the rear allows the top floor views across the train line to Totnes Castle and Totnes beyond. Two of the three units can either be dwellings or combine to function as office space.
The massing and use of materials create a clear delineation between the existing rough masonry garage structure and the extended structure to create a refined industrial aesthetic that is honest and sensitive to the surrounding context.
