Design

We are an architectural design and make practice, bringing the craft, skill and knowledge of making into all of our design work. Our strengths in design are broad - from concept design through to highly complex technical design.

At the larger end of the scale, we specialise in the residential architecture sector, working across all RIBA Work Stages 0-7: from initial project appraisal, through the approvals process, to construction, interior design, completion and occupation. Whilst we undertake work nationally and internationally, we have excellent working relationships with local collaborators and authorities in the South West, UK and a portfolio of beautifully executed architectural projects in the region. In particular we have a great deal of experience on working with Listed Buildings and on sensitive sites.

At the smaller end of the scale, we undertake design work for whole rooms, products, furniture and installations from concept development through to workshop and fabrication drawings. We are equally experienced in preparing workshop drawings for a skilled craftsperson or fabrication drawings for computer aided manufacture.

Make

From our Devon workshops we craft beautiful things, built to function and built to last. We pay careful attention to showcasing unique material properties and finishes with particular expertise in timber, metalwork and leather. Our use and marriage of materials is often the premise of our concepts, seeking out relevant new processes through innovative research and fearless experimentation.

We make at a range of scales, with our portfolio ranging from a doorstop to an entire small building. We bring the rigour, detail and critical thinking of design into all of our making. Equally we see making as a part of the design process as a means of realising the concept without compromise. The result is that our design is heavily informed by our experience and understanding of material through the make process and we are able to offer confidence to clients because of that.

Our involvement in the making process varies to suit the needs of each client and their project. We are also happy to make things that others have designed, or work collaboratively alongside other makers.

Whilst we are happy to work with a range of engineering practices, for the more challenging projects we recommend our long term partners at Define Engineers. Together we have designed and delivered a few of our more complex projects including The Nest. The addition of Define to our wider team is vital in providing a successful interdisciplinary platform.

So how does the collaboration work? The key ingredient for any project success is to build the right team from an early stage and therefore, where ever we identify a project that will benefit from specialist engineering input we encourage early consultation with Define. We have had fantastic results - through ensuring projects are appropriately serviced throughout the various appointment and design stages, time and again, the value this brings is abundantly clear. Whether this be a beautifully resolved detail, interface or structure, or project cost savings due to early design input and initiative.

Our collaboration with Define Engineers works between Devon and London, where we share office space.
